Author and Registered Dietitian, Victoria Shanta Retelny stopped by to share healthy eating tips in honor of National Cholesterol month!
Candace: With September being National Cholesterol Month; what are some simple things we can do to maintain a healthy normal cholesterol level?
Victoria Shanta Retelny: "Great. Yeah, there's so many things you can do as far as the food you're eating and I like to recommend because I have a sweet tooth- dark chocolate. Dark chocolate adds such powerful antioxidants to your diet which actually keeps your cholesterol in a healthy normal range and can actually keep that bad cholesterol from oxidizing. I do like to recommend about an ounce a day of dark chocolate; the other thing I like to tell people is lower your sodium intake. It doesn't mean you have to take away flavor but really think about how much sodium you have on your plate. The typical American eats twice as much salt and sodium as they should, so I recommend Mrs. Dash salt-free seasoning blends; there's 14 varieties. They have some great recipes on their website- go to MrsDash.com or check them out on facebook.
The other thing is snacking. So many people ask me 'how can I get healthy snacks in?' You know the USDA dietary guidelines recommend that people eat fat free and low fat dairy products and Weight Watchers cheese fits right in there because they have a line of cheese sticks and string cheese (and mozzarella happens to be my favorite) but that are low in calorie, high in protein and a good source of calcium. So that's one way to get some good snacking in. And also for kids; if you're the mom of children or a parent of a child you want to think about easy, accessible and portable snacks- GoGo squeeZ apple sauce is a great option. It comes in a resealable pouch (no refrigeration required) and it's 100% fruit, so that's something I feel good about giving my children. It comes in five flavors as well, so there's a lot of variety there."
Candace: How can we cut calories simply by changing what we drink?
VR: "Well, drinking does come up often and many people really need to think about the types of beverages they're taking in. If you're drinking high calorie beverages like coffee drinks and even juice drinks you want to think about how much of that you're drinking. You could either journal it down and write a log or also drink water; drink more fluids. Drink water before meals, drink them in between meals, sip water throughout the day. It's really going to help keep you hydrated for zero calories, so that's really my advice for drinking."
Candace: What are some simple ways we can add exercise to our daily routine?
VR: "Exercise is such a powerful tool to keep cholesterol levels down and weight down; so I recommend people get 30 minutes of physical activity most days a week- so that could be biking to and from work, taking a walk at lunch, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or even park further away from the store, so you're doing some more physical activity. It really does count toward heart health and weight management which is what we all need to be thinking about."
Candace: Do you have any additional tips or information?
VR: "No, I recommend that people go to the website News2Know.com or you could check out my website and my book called The Essential Guide to Healthy Healing Foods."
Dr. Herbert A. Raffaele - Chief, Division of International Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Conservation, joined me live from Busch Gardens to discuss the Save Vanishing Species stamp project and various ways we can help save endangered tigers and other wildlife from extinction.
Dr. Herbert Raffaele, live from Busch Gardens
Candace: Doctor, how did tigers become the most vulnerable species on the planet and can you discuss the challenges they face in the wild?
Dr. Herbert Raffaele: "Well, tigers have been endangered simply because of human population expansion into their natural range. So despite the fact that tigers once occurred throughout Asia, there were countless; hundreds of thousands of them, even 100 years ago. Less than 100 years ago there were 100,000. We're down to just a few thousand tigers. There are fewer tigers alive today than there were students in my high school when I was a kid, so the threat is simply that humans have expanded. The primary threat anyway is that humans have expanded into the habitat where tigers once lived and converted that habitat to something quite different and making it impossible for them to survive. There are other pressures as well, such as the illegal taking of tigers for medicinal purposes and so on; but the real basic threat has been abuse and elimination of their habitat."
Candace: How can we support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Conservation projects?
HR: "Well, there are several ways that the public can support U.S. Fish and Wildlife Conservation efforts; the broader program that we have is the Wildlife Without Borders program that tries to not only address the emergencies; the everyday problems that critically endangered species like tigers, and elephants, and rhinos, and great apes, and sea turtles face but also through avoiding the problems and preventing problems in the first place. As I said, different aspects of the Wildlife Without Borders program but what's special today is that a new stamp has come out; a stamp by the U.S. Postal Service that empowers Americans to paying an additional 11 cents to contribute, that 11 cents goes towards the conservation of these species so it's not a tax; this is Americans that care, who don't want to see these species become extinct on our watch to make a difference through this purchase and I want to mention that Busch Gardens SeaWorld has made this stamp their official stamp. There's a coalition of NGO's that widely support this and businesses (NGO's are non-governmental organizations and members of congress from both sides of the aisle) support it because it's something that most Americans believe in."
Save Vanishing Species stamp
Candace: Is the stamp available at all post offices throughout the country?
HR: "The stamp is available at most post offices; I'm not sure that it's all but certainly all the larger post offices. Today (September 20, 2011) is the first day of issue, so it is a special day. A lot of people will be going to get their stamp with first day seals; so most post offices is my understanding will carry it and people should also look at tigerstamp.com, it's another way to obtain a stamp."
Candace: Do you have any additional information you'd like to share on this wonderful cause?
HR: "Well, what I think what's special here is that this is a unique opportunity, this is a very straightforward and simple way that Americans can make a difference and you know, I think most Americans if they were aware just what tragic circumstances elephants, and rhinos, and tigers, and great apes, and other critically endangered species; if Americans were aware of just how serious this situation was I know that they would want to make a difference. And this is a new opportunity; this is the first day the stamp will be on sale at least for the next two years. It's a way to step forward and say I care."
Candace: Where can we go for more information?
HR: "Tigerstamp.com is an excellent website where more information on the stamp can be obtained and and people interested in the broader program of the Fish and Wildlife Service can look at the Fish and Wildlife Services webpage and look for Wildlife Without Borders."
Manoush Robin of Media Bistro joined me recently to share the newest and hottest tech gadgets to keep you and your loved ones connected this fall!
Candace: Do you have any suggestions when it comes to keeping families connected and organized?
Manoush Robin: "Oh, Candace, I absolutely do because I don't know about you- fall means back to school for people, but it also means back to back crazy family hectic schedules. So I've got some low cost and some even free ways that you can keep the family in sync and communicating. I want to start out by talking about how you can stay in touch with all the people in your life. You probably know Skype- it's a way of getting free and low cost calls but now you can make those calls straight from your home phone without even turning on your computer. The FREETALK Connect-me adaptor uses a broadband internet connection with your home phone and the adaptor is under $40. It comes with 60 minutes of free calls or if you're in the market for a new phone you might want to check out the Skype GE cordless which connects straight to your Skype contacts, so it's a way to keep that monthly phone bill negligible."
Candace: And with Skype, do you have to have a certain connection speed to use it?
MR: "You just need to have a broadband internet connection to use it, yeah."
Candace: How about when it comes to parents with small children?
MR: "I have got the perfect thing, this is not just for small children but for kids of any age; you probably know UNO, right? It's the card game that's really great for all ages and if you're looking for a way to get quality time as we're all talking about; a way for the family to take a break, this is great because UNO is turning 40 this year and it's getting a digital update with the unique personality. Meet Mattel's UNO Roboto. This little guy lets players customize their game, record their names; he'll even MC and keep track of your house rules. This is a fun way to get the family to actually come together and take a break."
Candace: Do you have any tips on keeping families active for fall?
MR: "Well, if anything we're finding that families are insanely active but mom or dad or whoever's in charge of running the carpools and all those things; they can be hard to sing for things because you don't know if it's going to work in your schedule. I have found a great way to keep track of your family's schedule and it's free. This is from Day-Timer and it's called HomeLife; it's an online calendar that lets you color code each family members schedule. You can also create to do lists and send reminders. You can get on your smartphone and you can sync it with your Google outlook calendar too. And let's face it, Candace, this is way more efficients than scrolling stuff on that calendar that you've got stuck on your refrigerator door.
Now the last thing I want to tell you about is more of a safety feature- Sprint has a new Drive First application for Android phones. It'll keep you; but especially I think teenagers safe by automatically locking a phone if the car is moving more than 10 miles per hour, so you can make sure that your kid isn't talking or texting while driving which we know is so dangerous; because the app sends incoming calls to voicemail, it replies to texts and it silences alerts and the app can be overridden in an emergency but it will alert mom or dad. And this is a great price as well, only $2 per month per phone but you can find out more about all of these products and other great ideas that we have for keeping your family connected- just go to DailyLounge.com, that's the place to go!"
Happy Sunday! My good friends up at PB & J Boutique in Chico, California kindly gave me a beautiful top by Mystree for review and I must say I'm MORE than in love with it! Beauty Expert, Jenn Falik shares the top red carpet beauty and hair trends from Sunday night's Emmy Awards and how you can recreate them! Image via JennFalik.com
Candace: What were some of your favorite looks from Sunday night's Emmys?
Jenn Falik:"I thought that the hair at the Emmys was gorgeous. I was lucky to host an Emmy viewing party with Wella Professional and got to hang out with their celebrity stylists and talk about the hair as we were seeing it. The hot topic of conversation was color- Gretchen Mol with her buttery blond hair; we saw a lot of pastel undertones. Nina Dobrev and Emily Blunt- rich brunettes; they all use Wella Professional styling products for the big night. And you can go to your colorist and ask them to use Wella color. And on a daily basis I think taking care of your hair; all these celebrities know that they need to do it for their hair to look good for those big nights, Wella's Enrich line is great because it's hydrating. It's shampoo, conditioner, treatment are easy to follow and keeps your hair really shiny but still voluminous. Any style that we saw on the red carpet really requires that your hair have volume. The Velvet Amplifier hair primer is also a great final step before you even start styling, it improves how your hair responds to products, and as far as the styles go that we saw; specific styles, Evan Rachel Wood with her edgy finger-wave; she just cut her hair really short, you go to use a product cocktail to get a look like this, really any look that we saw on the red carpet. It's not just one product, it's usually a blend of 3,4,5 that these stylists put together. Sebastian Professional Potion 9 is a great first step, it's lightweight, it's going to keep your hair conditioned and manageable as you style. Then for Evan Rachel Wood's you need a strong hold gel like Gel Forte. It has a little shimmer in it so your hair looks extra healthy. And Professional Shaper Plus+ is a backstage red carpet favorite for that final touch of hairspray before you walk out the door, even for a breezier style like Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter; she had textured tresses. You'll still use a product- Cocktail Potion 9 Lite, then Sebastian Professionals Whip Cream is great for holding those nice waves. Hair spray's still key even if you don't want your hair to look like it's done, and you need to put some hairspray in there to keep the look the way you want it- so you go with the Shaper Lite there. It gives you hold but it still gives you movement and with a look like what Jennifer Carpenter did, movement is key. It's all about swishing your hair around on that red carpet which to really get the full effect."
Candace: What about beauty trends?
JF: "The makeup was really minimal on the red carpet. I think it was such a hot day in LA that no one wanted to pile on the foundation, so skin has to be perfect. And Giuliana Rancic who knows what looks good on the red carpet, as she spends many hours on that red carpet at every award show; she loves DDF's Amplifying Elixir. It's a pre moisturizing treatment with a potent blend of botanicals; use it twice a day, it's going to boost your hydration up to 70%. Use it post cleansing and pre moisturizing. With any skincare regimen, it doesn't matter what other products you use, putting this into your skincare routine will help you to get red carpet ready."
Candace: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
JF: "For more information on Wella products you can follow them on twitter at WellaHairUSA and for more details on all the things we talked about today and all the celeb looks, you can go to LifeMinute.TV."
Olivia Palermo obtained fame on MTV's reality show "The City" and over the last few years has gained notoriety as one of the top style icons in not just the nation but in the world. She's joined the likes of celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, actress Rachel Bilson and model Byrdie Bell as one of Piperlime's select guest editors. I recently had the pleasure of discussing the latest fashion trends for fall with Olivia, how to incorporate the hottest looks, and where will be seeing her next!
Style Icon, Olivia Palermo has paired up with Piperlime as their latest Guest Editor to discuss her top fashion picks for fall!
Candace: What are the hottest trends we'll be seeing for fall?
Olivia Palermo: "Fall- 70s is definitely back, you see a lot of influence in 70s. The cape is one of my biggest fall picks on Piperlime, I love it. You can wear it with a pair of skinny jeans and motorcycle boots (if you're looking for something more casual) and if you want to dress up, I think a pair of flared jeans or wide leg slacks is a great way to go if you're going to the office or out to dinner or lunch with friends. And the chunky heel- I'm so happy that the chunky heel is in. It's slightly smaller than we've seen in previous seasons but that's nice and I think that for women it's almost slightly better in a way that you can kind of have a little more naturalness when you walk. Then you have the mid length skirt along with the romantic top which is lovely paired with a mid length boot, which is great because then you're nicely covered for fall but you're still very fashion forward. And then you have the structured bag which goes with absolutely everything, and I would definitely wear that with the cape and a great pair of wide leg pants."
Candace: Are these looks that women of all shapes and sizes can wear?
OP: "Absolutely and I think when I was deciding my picks on Piperlime I was looking at that. I think the wide leg flared jeans is a great look, it really dresses for all body types as well as the romantic top, so that's something to keep in mind. And when you go online and you shop, you can incorporate what you already have in your wardrobe with Piperlime's trendy picks and it's nice. I think there's something for everyone."
Candace: Do you have any tips when incorporating say like the cape top with jeans and stuff like that?
OP: "Absolutely. You really have to dress for your body type, you have to put on your own personal touch. You can't be so much into trends, you have to feel comfortable and add whether it's an accessory or the way that you style, keep that in mind.
Some of Olivia Palermo's picks for fall!
Candace: What colors will be big this season?
OP: "You're definitely going to see burgundy. Burgundy is big. You're going to see kind of a muddy yellow; browns are back- really solid colors and of course, I love neutral."
Candace: What is one essential item you feel that every woman should have in their closet this season?
OP: "Oh, that's a good question. I would definitely have to say the cape. I think that's the piece that you will have for years to come. It'll come back and you can wear it if you're a teenager, or in your twenties or if you're even older than that; it's definitely versatile."
Candace: How about when it comes to shoes and accessories? What are the must haves?
OP: "The must have are; I love these gray booties that you see here, it's a perfect transition from fall into winter. It has a great heel, it's not too high but it also has a rubber sole, so if you do have bad weather you're still going to be fashionable and fabulous."
Candace: With this being fashion week in New York, have you had a chance to take in any shows?
OP: "I have. I've enjoyed myself very much, and Marchesa was absolutely beautiful yesterday."
Candace: Do you have any additional information you'd like to share?
OP: "No, I just think that if you go on 'Shop My Picks' on Piperlime.com, I hope you'll enjoy."

Candace: "And as for you, Olivia, where will we be seeing you next?
OP: "You will probably be seeing me for the rest of the month at fashion week in London and in Paris, and then you'll see me on Piperlime.com."
In honor of September being National Coupon month, Consumer savings expert & Media personality, Andrea Woroch joined me to share her top money saving shopping tips for fall! Image via Twitter.com/AndreaWoroch
Candace: With September being National Coupon Month, can you give us some tips when it comes to shopping online with coupons?
Andrea Woroch: "Whether shopping in-store or online, always look for a coupon. More retailers rely on coupons to attract new customers, so chances are that there's a deal available somewhere in cyber space. Search coupon aggregator sites like FreeShipping.org to find thousands of free shipping codes for popular stores like Kohls, Target and Old Navy. If you come to a retailer's check out page and find a box asking for a promotional code or coupon code, don't skip over it. You are missing out on simple savings. If you are having no luck finding a coupon online, try the retailer's social media site. Shoppers can find exclusive offers delivered via Twitter and Facebook. Otherwise, you can try searching emailing or calling the customer service rep to find out if any coupon codes are available."
Candace: How about at the grocery store or at the pump?
AW: "The Sunday circular is still one of the most popular places to find grocery coupons but more and more shoppers are relying on their smart phones for savings--and why, it's simple and doesn't require any time to clip. CouponSherpa, which offers printable grocery coupons on their website, also features a free mobile coupon app with grocery savings. Additionally, most grocers offer coupons online via the store's website, which can be loaded directly to a loyalty reward card. Simply swipe the card at check out and coupons will be automatically deducted.
Many retailers let you stack coupons, so look for opportunities to use a store coupon along with a manufacturer coupon to double the discount. As well, some grocers offer double or triple coupon days. This means that the supermarket doubles or in some cases triples the value of the coupon for redeeming them on that specific day.
For gas savings, look for special promotions offered through local grocery stores. Whether the grocery chain offers their own gas or they have a partnership with a gas brand like Shell, you may be able to redeem your reward card points for savings at the pump.
Use credit cards that offer grocery and/or gas incentives. Many credit card companies now offer three to five percent in reward points (perhaps cash or travel depending on the type of card you have.)"
Candace: Are there hidden places we should look or places we'd never think to look?
AW: "Look for coupons:
on store receipts (many retailers now promote store discount for taking part in customer service survey online)
on the back of ticket stubs (including local events)
in magazines
social media sites like Twitter and Facebook."
Candace: Apps. on smartphones are all the rage these days; are there certain apps. you recommend when it comes to bargain shopping?
AW: "Cellphire and CouponSherpa have grocery coupon apps.
Red Laser is a barcode scanning app. that provides instant price comparison with online stores.
Foursquare is a geo-based social media app. that let's users 'check-in' to earn points and badges. Retailers, restaurants and other types of small business establishments (sometimes hotels) offer deals for those who check-in like freebies and coupons.
SalesLocator uses your location to find store sales nearby.
GasBuddy helps find the cheapest gas based on your location.
CheapGas navigates you to the least expensive gas station on your route (great for road trips or driving in unfamiliar areas.)"
Phsyician & ADHD expert, Dr. Patricia Quinn joined me recently to discuss childhood ADHD and new treatment options available. Image via Psychology Today
Candace: Can you tell us about the recent survey that was conducted?
Dr. Patricia Quinn: "Yes, set up a little background- this survey was conducted this July of 2011 and it was cosponsored by ADDitude magazine, the largest consumer magazine for information about ADHD; and the survey really underscored the difficult decision that parents have at deciding to medicate their child. Despite that almost all of the parents (94%) chose to use medication during the school day. Parents were more reluctant to use medication at other times and yet parents told us they had continuing challenges managing their child's behaviors. Over half of the parents told us that homework time was especially difficult and that for other chores and other social events their child's behaviors also were problematic. But of the parents who even did use medication during these other times, 40% of the parents who did use medication at other times also told us they wanted more flexibility and control around medicating their child. So they wanted more options, they wanted some information about some of the options for other treatments for ADHD and other medications available."
Candace: Why do you think that some parents might be against medicating their children at home?
PQ: "Well, they really weren't against medicating their child at home, they had lots of reasons for being reluctant to treat them; sometimes it was that the medication they were using wasn't effective, for 1/3 of the parents it might be side effects, for 1/3 of the parents they thought that school was the most important and they didn't need to deal with these behaviors. I think what I experience is that parents really need information and they are asking for flexibility and they need information, so they can make an informed decision. I always encourage parents that they should be good consumers and good advocates. They should go out there and talk to their child's physician, they should talk to other parents, they should seek out really proven information; safe information from some of these websites like yours where we can gather information and then make an informed decision for treatment options for their child."
Candace: What do parents have in terms of options when it comes to back to school?
PQ: "Well, one of the things that we find is often parents haven't heard about some of these longer acting medications. For example parents have not heard about Daytrana which is the only patch available for treatment of ADHD, and because it's a patch as opposed to a pill it allows some of that flexibility parents are looking for- for example it's approved for a nine hour wear time so you can wear it for nine hours and get 10 hours of effective symptom control during the school days or on weekends when that child has a lot of activities. And because it's a patch, it can be removed. You can also then wear it for varying lengths of time- 4, 5, 6 hours and get different lengths of control depending for example if the child gets up later, has activities that may be for a shorter period of time on the weekends. It gives them some flexibility and parents need to have this information. They need to go to some of the websites and get this information and talk to their physician about some of the treatment options."
Candace: Do you have any additional information you'd like to share?
PQ: "I think parents need to consistently treat and in order to make that decision they need the information. ADDitude magazine- their website ADDitudemag.com has a lot of information about ADHD in general and the total treatment; Daytrana.com - that website has information about the patch I talked about. I also recommend that parents make sure that they are on the same page in treating the disorder and know that the symptoms persist all the time, so they need to talk to their physician; they need to get the information and they need to make an informed decision and that way they can ensure their child will have a successful school year, not just in school but at home as well as with friends and during social and athletic activities."
Happy Thursday! This evening I'm happy to share exclusive video coverage from the spring 2012 runway show of one of my favorite designers, Mr. All American himself, Ralph Lauren!
Gaby Goddard, Editor-in-Chief and Vice President of AARP Viva discusses steps women of all ages need to take to prepare for retirement.
Candace: As the vice president and editor-in-chief of AARP Viva can you tell us about the Decide. Create. Share. initiative?
Gaby Goddard: "Yes, AARP had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of all different ages but mostly around the boomer age 45+. 75% of these women told us that they are already starting to think about their future; starting to make plans and really think about how they want to live their second youth. And they're very concerned, you know they don't want to become a burden to family and friends, so they are deciding to create a plan that they will share, this is then the Decide. Create. and Share. We put together a website, Candace, that sort of walks people step by step through the questions that we need to ask ourselves to think about this plan and there's four specific areas as well - these are health and these are finance, legal and looking your dwelling; looking at your house and the community in which you are living today to see if this will work for you for the future."
Candace: An AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) recent survey revealed that of the 40 million boomer women, many will face significant challenges living independently as they age. What can women of this generation do to prepare?
GG: "Well, this is where being proactive comes in really and being aspirational, and what I would say women can do is look at those four areas that have an impact on our lives. I started with health; both my parents live in Argentina so I called them up and said 'look how are you living your second youth? How is it with health? What are the problems that you are experiencing?' My mom told me about a little bit of arthritis on her neck, so I went to see my doctor. I'm now prepared, I've been told what to do so that I don't age and have problems with my neck in the future. Same thing with diabetes, I"m already anticipating that. In terms of finances, I took a deep look at my finance today and what I might need in the future. I know in my family women live very long. My grandmother died at the age of 95 (both sides) so I might have a long life to live; is my money going to outlive me? Am I putting enough money into my 401(k)? Is it time to downsize? I am a single woman with a house- five bedrooms, four bathrooms. Did I really need that? No, I downsized. I went and moved into an apartment and now I'm renting that house out, putting additional money away into my 401(k) and retirement accounts; then I spoke to a lawyer. I want my daughter who is a 23 year old to be able to know exactly what it is that I want to do with my future- medical directives, living will, trust; all those things are in order for her so that it's not a wondering game. It's really a time in your life where you are in control of your life, instead of being reactive you're enjoying it."
Candace: At what age should young women start saving and preparing for retirement?
GG: "That's an excellent question; women of any age. It's never too late and it's definitely never too early to start. We don't want to find ourselves again having to react and not having the paperwork ready or having to make rush decisions about moving to a smaller house for example. So in the case of my daughter, she's 23 and she's already halfway down that checklist that we provide on the Create. Decide. & Share. website at AARP.org/Decide. So there's really no age to start."
Candace: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
GG: "Well, planning. Planning for your future in order to make sure you are in control of it is a very good idea for anybody at any age and it's a way of insuring that you can do this planning in an aspiration fashion and proactive fashion instead of reacting at the last minute, so don't be overwhelmed. We have your back, we have a checklist, we have resources. Come visit our website, also our last issue of AARP Viva magazine which is a bilingual magazine that I edit; we have an insert that explains for women to women how to plan for their future. We actually had a conversation with four of these women at different stages of their planning and it's really good advice, so I invite everybody to visit that as well."
Hope your week is going fashionably well! Continuing with this week's New York Fashion Week EXCLUSIVE video coverage, I'm pleased to bring you the Nanette Lepore and Custo Barcelona Spring 2012 runway shows!
Candace: What are the must haves in skin care for fall?
Jeannine Morris: "With skin care we have to change our regimen a little bit for fall and I'm going to suggest a product called Bio-Oil first because you can use this on your face and body. Most importantly it keeps your skin moisturized and going into fall we need to stay moisturized. It's made with purcellin oil, so it's not greasy at all. It has vitamins and botanical extracts in it that absorb quickly into your skin. It also helps to rid scars and stretchmarks and it helps to even out your skin tone on your face and on your body. Now 47% of women said in a survey that they didn't know they could do anything about existing scars but with Bio-Oil you can help to minimize them over time which I think is amazing and it's crazy that women don't know that. So this product has so many uses besides moisturizing as you see and it's a great bang for your buck because it's only $12 at drugstores, so I highly stress incorporating this into your fall regimen."
Candace: How about when it comes to makeup trends?
JM: "The red lip and the metallic eye. Those are my two favorite ones that are out for fall right now. I saw them backstage at New York Fashion Week and now they're following. Celebs are starting to use them and those are two of the biggest makeup trends that people should start doing for fall. With the red lip you can't go wrong, you just have to be confident enough to wear it; and with the metallic eye you can incorporate metallic colors into your smokey eye look at night or you can just do a little bit of metallic in the inner corner of your eye to pop it out."
Candace: What are your favorite skin care products?
JM: "Now my next favorite product for skin going from summer into fall would be by Physicians Formula. Now this is their 'Dark Spot Corrector & Skin Brightener Formula; it's from their anti aging collection and it claims to make you look six years younger in just four weeks which is a pretty strong claim. I'll tell you why and how it works - you know in the sun when you lay out and you get all those spots on your face? They're called sun spots and some people might get age spots, well, this will pick up all of those spots and then brighten your complexion; so it makes you look super young. A lot younger in just four weeks, so that's really important and we'll put our best face forward this fall. It's just a part of a whole collection that Physicians Formula has out right now. They have like tons of cleansers, moisturizers and other treatment products for different skin types; everything can be found at Walmart for under $20, so again it's very affordable stuff."

Candace: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
JM: "You know we're talking about makeup and skin care but if all of that is put together and your smile isn't; I think it kind of throws off the whole scheme, so I would suggest to make sure you have a bright white smile going into fall. Put your best face forward, so I'm going to recommend the Crest 3D White collection. They have a vivid toothpaste that has a dual-action silica system and now this removes 80% of surface stains from your teeth in just two weeks and that's just by brushing them. But they also have their white strips- their 'Professional Effects' white strips. They use the same ingredients that dentist offices use; so at the dentist office if you go to get a professional whitening, you know you're going to get charged a couple hundred dollars, but if you do it at home this kit costs $50 and you see results in as little as three days. So I think that's another thing that people can do for fall, is an easy pick me up and it's affordable."
Good evening fashionistas! Hope you're loving the exclusive video coverage I've been sharing these past few days of the runway shows taking place at New York Fashion Week! Tonight I'm happy to bring you footage of Donna Karan's Spring 2012 show. Enjoy!
Writer and producer, Roger Wolfson and SAMHSA Associate Director of Consumer Affairs, Paolo Del Vecchio joined me to chat about the Voice Awards and why they're advocating on behalf of substance abuse and mental health.
Candace: Paolo, as the Associate Director of Consumer Affairs at SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) can you tell us more about the agency please?
Paolo Del Vecchio: "Sure. SAMHSA is one of about a dozen different agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and our focus is on improving mental health and addiction treatment services and our focus is on improving mental health and addiction treatment services around the nation."
Candace: This question is for both you and Roger- how has mental illness affected and shaped your life and how did you first become involved in advocating for substance abuse and mental health?
Paolo Del Vecchio: "Let me start and then Roger, you can add to this. But I am personally impacted by mental health issues in that I have suffered from depression for most of my life and actually since the third grade was my first experience. I've been suicidal; have received various forms of mental health treatment and services, and using that experience as well as those of many of my immediate family as well experiencing the same issues really gives me the passion for the work that I do, and why I advocate around mental health and addiction issues is because of my own personal experience that I've had."
Roger Wolfson: "And as far as myself, Candie, my first real introduction to the issue on a professional level was when I was working in the U.S. Senate. I was staff to Senator John Kerry back in 1996 when the Republicans actually came with a massive budget cutting bill that would have eliminated a huge portion of it from SAMHSA and John Kerry took to the floor with me behind him to fight for it, and that's when I learned some important statistics like the fact that every dollar of funding that's spent on substance abuse and mental health treatment saves seven dollars for the American consumer almost immediately. It just makes sense."
Candace: Roger, as a talented writer and producer yourself, can you tell us about this years Voice Awards? (The awards took place on August 24th)
RW: "Yeah, sure. The Voice Awards every year is really an amazing experience but this year one of the things that's really an honor for us in this community is that Ron Barber is coming. Ron Barber, you may know is the Deputy Director for Gabrielle Giffords state office and so he was one of the people who was shot back on January 8th and he's coming along with the mayor of Tucson and his wife. The three of them have been advocating greater funds and greater programs to help people who suffer from collective trauma like that and one of the reasons why I'm going to be so honored to meet Ron this evening is that I'm part of that family. Anybody who watched what happened to Gabrielle Giffords; anyone who watched what happened on 9/11, we've all become collectively part of the experience of dealing with national events. We're all going through trauma on a very regular basis and we need to be aware of the impact it has on us and we need to be able to reach out for help."
Candace: Absolutely. Paolo, can you give us a little more background on some of the other recipients this year?
PD: "Sure. And the basic premise of the Voice Awards is to recognize tv and film productions that have done an outstanding job of addressing mental health and addictions issues as well as community leaders like the Tucson mayor and Ron Barber, but some of the productions that are nominated for awards this year include the tv series 'Parenthood'."

Candace: My favorite show!
PD: "Oh is it? Okay and actually one of the stars of that show, Peter Krause, is going to be our host tonight. We're also recognizing the series 'Grey's Anatomy' as well as 'Private Practice; and the actress, Kate Walsh, who will also be there with us tonight. Some of the films that we'll be recognizing including 'The Fighter,' as well as 'The Kings Speech.' So that's just a sampling of some of the productions. We are going to be webcasting the event live tonight starting at 6:15 pacific time if your audience wants to go to Samhsa.gov/VoiceAwards, they can start seeing the red carpet arrival at 6:15 tonight."
Candace: How are recipients chosen and how are they nominated for awards?
PD: "We get nominations from both the entertainment industry from writers and producers as well as from the public, and what's been really interesting, Candie, is that we've seen an increase in the number of nominations each year for the six years that we've done the Voice Awards. This past year we've added 200 nominations (the most ever) around tv and film productions. We then have writers and producers who help us with the judging. We have people from the health and addictions community that help us with the judging. We have kind of a three step process to do the judging, to when we get to the final winners that will be announced tonight."
Candace: Do you have any additional information or anything you'd like to share with viewers?
PD: "You know I have one message and then Roger you can add to this, but one main message I'd certainly like to leave you with and that's the message of recovery and that people can and do overcome mental health and addiction issues to live happy and full lives."
RW: "And I'd just like to encourage your viewers, your readers and your listeners to actually check out the webcast and also check out SAMHSA's website, Samsha.gov because there's a lot of information that's genuinely helpful; a lot of things there that people I think will find inspiring and universal. When you watch the award ceremony tonight there's so many times that they'll pan around the audience and you'll see Laura San Giacomo crying or you'll see Melissa Manchester nodding her head. What's going on with mental health and these issues is something that we all are touched by, affected by and experienced ourselves."
Candace: I couldn't agree more. I love what you're both doing, so thank you very much and I will be watching tonight and I'll make sure that my viewers are too. So thank you again, I really appreciate it.
RW: "Thank you, Candie."
PD: "Thank you."
