Celebrity Interview: Monica Pedersen of HGTV Shares DIY Projects A Novice Can Accomplish

 

DIY expert, Monica Pedersen of HGTV stopped by to share great tips on completing your first do-it-yourself project! 

 

Candace Rose: Do-it-yourself projects can seem like a daunting task, especially for those of us who've never done one before. Where do we begin?

Monica Pedersen: "Well, a great do-it-yourself project is painting. It's the least expensive and easiest way that we can transform our space either through painting the walls, cabinetry or even accessories. But before you open up that gallon of pain, you really need to do a little research and do your prep work, so doing the right prep work really will differentiate you from being an amateur painter and a professional painter. Part of prep work is having the right tools to work with, so what I tell people who are jumping into it for the first time with paint - 'I say when you choose your paint, make sure you get the right finish but also invest in a low-voc paint, that's a paint that's going to emit less smell and less gasses, so it's good for the environment but it's also good for us beginner/do-it-yourself painters because on top of the frustration of sort of learning what we're doing, we don't have to smell the paint at the same time. So, do a nice low-voc paint; get a roller, look for a nap that matches the texture and surface on your walls, so don't forget to check that out; good paint brush, good quality brush that you're going to want to use again. Make sure the brush matches the finish if you're using oil-based or latex (they have different brushes for that.) And lastly, most importantly you have to have the right time, so I love 3M.' This is called ScotchBlue Painter's Tape with Edge-Lock and the edge lock is the adhesion that's going to give you that really clean line, that once you peel off that tape after you've painted your baseboards or your walls, it's going to give you that sharp, super sharp straight line that makes it look like a pro did it.

    And when I've been in houses; I've done over 100 episodes of a design show and homeowners would love to show me the rooms that they'd painted and believe me when I'd walk in the door, I knew they'd painted them and that was because of the wall covers, because of the lines. And I've done that myself, so super sharp straight lines really makes it look professional; so take your time, do your research, really get the right tools, do your prep work.

    If you want to just try introducing color through accessories whether you're doing or entertaining indoors or outdoors here are a couple of fun projects that I created (shown below) - black and white's been really popular this summer, it's just a classic black and white awning stripe and again I created these stripes with tape but you can seee the yellow flowers and even just serving a little orange juice on the beverage tray, that fun summer colors can make a difference. If you're entertaining and you're bringing this stuff outside, it looks finished. It's festive, it's fun and when you're accessorizing I often tell people- 'designers, we bring in accessories for impact like those little finishing touches are the things that really make a space a home, that you really make a space pop and you wnat to do your accessories in groups of three.'

A nice detail to bring in is a pillow because you can always throw a pillow somewhere on a chair, on a bench and that can sort of be your third accesory. I love pattern, I'm a big pattern girl and I decided to dress up this pillow (shown below) just with a simple pattern and I did this with stenciling and using fabric paint. You start with your stencil middle, you tape it off with your blue painters tape and then you add another layer to it. A little tip that helps out with this is to actually pin your fabric down, so I"ll put a piece of cardboard in between the fabric on one side of the pillow and the other, and when I'm stenciling none of that paint ever goes through and then I can also stick a couple of straight pins in there as well into the cardobard, so fun little accessorizing.

 Now if you'd done your walls and youv'e done some painting with accessories and you're going 'you know what I feel good, I think I'm a painter, I'm ready to tackle the big project;' the big project is your kitchen, kitchen cabinets. Now check this out, I've got a before and after (shown below); simple, simple, simpel. Off white glossy paint. You can see the before, you can see the after. I just finished the look with a nice polishe chrome pull. People are afraid to paint their kitchen cabinets because it's such a large surface, we're all afraid of it because if you screw it up, they're really expensive to replace. However the same principles that you're using painting your wall, painting your tray are to be used when you're doing your cabinet - it's the prep, it's priming, it's a light sanding. You know having the right tools and again I'm going to use my tape just to help guide me as you see here (shown below) a lot of people don't realize that you don't paint the inside box of your kitchen cabinet, you only paint both sides of the door as well as the frame on it, so I use my ScotchBlue painters tape just to give me a guide and just to keep me from gettning paint into the inside of the box for my cabinet. You can start with the walls, start with your accessories, get those paint skills under your belt and then you can go forward in your kitchen if you want to."

Many DIY beginners make the mistake of painting the inside of cabinets, which expert, Monica Pedersen strongly discourages. 

 

CR: Sure! Haha

MP: "Are you feeling it now, Candace? You said you've never done this before before, but I'm hoping that you're inspired!"

CR: I had wallpaper for years and years and years and it took me FOREVER to take it off and what do I do? I paint my walls white!

MP: What's wrong with that? White is really popular right now. Pale neutrals are in! All you've got to do is bring a piece of artwork that's colorful and it will pop off that white wall. Do you like the white? Was it a fun experience?

CR: You know what, I actually feel good about it but everyone says 'you should have done color; you shouldn't be afraid of color.' So, thank you for making me feel better!

MP: You know what, you do what feels right. Our homes are our homes, we should surround ourselves with things that make us feel good and if white walls make you feel good; sometimes minimal can be very glamorous, very chic, so enjoy your white walls. If you want to bring in color, bring in a couple pillows, bring in a lampshade, a lamp or maybe some artwork. I love white walls, I think they're lovely and especially if you don't have a lot of natural light coming in it's a good way to keep a space brighter."

Interview: NYC Dermatologist, Dr. Diane Berson on Preventing and Treating Adult Acne

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with highly renowned New York City dermatologist, Dr. Diane Berson, a frequent contributor to NBC's Today Show, The CBS Early Show and ABC World News Tonight, to name a few, on the topic of adult acne which plagues over half of women from the ages of 25 to 58, including yours truly! If you've ever wondered if acne is caused by what you eat, how it can be prevented, how to treat it properly and why you've been affected by it while others have not, you've come to the right place!

Candace Rose: What are the most common myths and misconceptions about adult acne?

Dr. Diane Berson: "I think the biggest myth is that people think that acne is a condition that just occurs in teens during adolescence and that everyone grows out of it and that it's not something you can have as an adult. But in reality a lot of adults have acne."

 

CR: What causes adult acne and why are some adults affected by it while others aren't?

DB: "The causes of adult acne are essentially the same as that for adolescent acne - it usually develops first during adolescence because of the surge of hormones with puberty and most of the flares of acne that occur in adulthood are also caused by hormonal flares and hormonal fluctuations, especially in adult women. Genetics plays a role and also stress can cause acne to flare. For adult women the hormonal flares are very relevant because women have all these hormonal fluctuations every month before their period; they can break out when they go on or of the birth control pill; when they become pregnant and we certainly see a lot of acne around perimenopause and menopause but women are also chronically under stress, so the combination of hormonal fluctuations and stress can cause chronic acne flares. Skin care products can cause a little bit of acne if they're very heavy or greasy and clog the pores and that can play a role too, but for men and women it's mainly genetics, heredity, hormones and stress."

CR: How about when it comes to body acne? How can it be treated and prevented?

DB: "Well, body acne can be be treated and prevented the same way as facial acne. Basically the areas one is prone to developing acne include the face, the scalp, the chest, the upper back and then the buttock and groin. It's going to get worse in areas that get sweaty and oily and clogged when you work out, especially if you're wearing this tight adherent workout clothing - like the tight lycra and spandex and it can't breathe and then you sweat, so we do recommend you wearing loose cotton shorts, loose cotton shirts; basically showering soon after the workout as possible to remove all the sweat and grease and cool you down as fast as possible. For treating facial acne - the issue when you're dealing with adults, especially adult women is that they may simultaneously have very dry or sensitive skin or sun damaged skin along with their acne, so you want to use a product line that's going to improve their acne, dry out the pimples to prevent new acne but at the same time not irritate the skin and also maybe even help some of the signs of premature aging that a lot of women are developing such as fine lines and wrinkles; discoloration and blotchiness."

 

CR: Do you have any suggestions for those with sensitive acne prone skin?

DB: "Yeah, well there's a new line that's targeting adult females and it's called Olay Pro-X Clear and it's a skin care regimen basically that's made for women (adult women) and men can use it too. It includes a cleanser that contains salicylic acid which will help declog the pores and prevent new acne lesions from surfacing. It contains a lotion with salicylic acid and again you want to use this on the entire affected area. You don't just spot treat acne but you use it all over to help prevent new pimples while you're resolving the pimples that are there. But also adults with acne do need to use a moisturizer, a light moisturizer that won't clog their pores, but a moisturizer which will keep their skin looking smooth and supple and plump, and will help reduce some of the fine lines and wrinkles. The moisturizer in the Olay Pro-X Clear line contains niacinamide which is a barrier repair product. It's a vitamin B and it'll actually plump up the skin, smooth out the fine lines and wrinkles and fade some of the pigmentation, so you're using a product that can address some of the anti-aging needs as well as the acne needs of the adult female."

CR: Do they have a product line for body acne as well or is it just facial?

DB: "You would use the same line on the other areas of the body whether it's the chest, back or buttock. There's also a medicated sulfur mask as part of the line and I think that would be great, certainly for areas that are large surface body areas and other areas that are hard to reach such as the buttock, chest and back, and will sort of suck up the oils, unclog the pores and also dry out any of the acne that's there."

 

CR: Gadgets such as the Clarisonic have become extremely popular for skin care, do you recommend using gadgets like that for people with acne?

DB: "Sure. Those can be very helpful and you can pick what cleanser you want whether it's a cleanser with salicylic acid or just a simple mild cleanser. Olay actually has the similar product to the Clarisonic, it's the advanced cleansing system and it's same idea - you put the cleanser on it with the rotating brush. It's very good for areas such as the face, the chest and the back where you want to remove the surface oil and debris that's clogging the pores."

 

CR: Are there any foods or supplements that can help prevent future outbreaks?

DB: "There aren't specifically foods that will treat acne or even specific foods that will cause someone to get acne but certainly we always recommend that patients eat a well balanced healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables, certainly a good amount of fish such as salmon; nuts and grains - almonds are terrific, they contain the Omega-3 fatty acids but all of these foods that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants and Omega-3's will certainly make the skin look better because they're good for the body and the skin is the largest organ of the body."

CR: Are there any chemicals in makeup that people with acne should avoid?

DB: "You might want to avoid products that have too much fragrance or preservatives, especially if you have sensitive skin. You might want to use products that do contain sun protection so that you avoid further redness and discoloration of the skin when you suffer from acne."

 

CR: Do you have any additional information or tips you'd like to share?

DB: "Well, I think it's important that everyone with acne realize that there is a skin product for every skin type and that if you are an adult who is suffering from premature aging at the same time as acne, there is a product line that's specifically targeted for you. It's a great idea to use a moisturizer and not worry that it's going to cause acne flare. Of course use daily sun protection to prevent further aging of the skin and skin cancer. Celebrity Interview: 12-Time Olympic Swimming Medalist, Dara Torres

I recently had the pleasure of speaking one-on-one with one of the most talented Olympic athletes of our time, Olympic swimmer, Dara Torres, who has won twelve medals (including four gold) in five Olympics and at age 44 is looking to compete next year in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Candace Rose: You're such an inspiration to so many people, especially women. Can you tell us what you've been up to?

Dara Torres: "Well, the past year and a half I've been rehabbing my knee. I've had some major reconstructive knee surgery, so I've been working on that. I got back in the water in August and started training again for what will hopefully be my last Olympic trials and hopefully Olympic games.

 I recently had the chance to sit down with America's favorite housewife of Orange County, Gretchen Rossi to go over her favorite health, fitness and fashion tips for summer and of course what you can expect to see next season on "The Real Housewives of Orange County," if indeed there is a season seven!

Candace Rose: What can we do to get fit and trim this summer?

Gretchen Rossi: "Well, there's definitely a lot of tips that I have but the first and foremost is obviously exercise. Exercise is really important; daily activities - anything from jumping on your beach cruiser or your bicycle to going for a hike, to taking a walk along the beach. I have two little dogs, so I get to go to the park a lot with them and when I'm at the park I'll do a couple laps or I'll do a couple sets of lunges, so that really keeps me active every day. However, I don't have time to go to the gym for two hours at a time anymore, so I have learned a little trick and I put weights all around my house (5 to 10-lb weights) and throughout my day if I have 10 minutes here or 10 minutes there I literally pick up my weights and I do a set of bicep curls or my shoulder presses or I do push ups; or instead of just sitting on the couch and watching tv I'll do my crunches or squats and that's really the way that I've been able to help stay in shape without having to commit two hours to the gym every day."

CR: How about when it comes to fashion and style? What are some universal tips that every woman needs?

GR: "Well, fashion and style really comes down to the individual. It comes to what they look and feel best in. If you aren't confident in the way that you feel and look in something it's going to show all over your face and then you're not going to look sexy, so it really depends on the person. However, when it comes to swimsuit season, you know for the women that have a little bit of problem areas or are a little bit more self conscious, you can always find a really pretty wrap. You can find a sheer wrap so that you can still get some color through that, but you don't have to come prancing out in a two piece bikini. You know even finding a sandal that has a slight heel or buying a wedge or something can help elongate your legs and make you feel a little bit sexier in your bikini as well. A spray tan always helps you look so much better and gives you that kind of golden glow for the summer and it helps camouflage cellulite, so that's always a good thing as well.

Interview: Professional Skateboarder Turned Celebrity Sports Stylist, Cindy Whitehead

Candace Rose: As an accomplished professional skateboarder, did you have any aspirations to work in fashion?

Cindy Whitehead: "I always loved fashion but was more into surf/street style when I skated. I was sponsored by various companies and most were nice enough to humor me and make custom made tee's for me in the color ways I requested and the girls versions of tees. It's a male dominated industry, so back then girls just usually wore what the boys wore. I also tried to make sure my 'look' stood out when skating with all boys. When there were award shows for us skaters, I would call women's surf wear companies, run my pitch by them and see if they would send some cute things over for me to wear in exchange for promotion. So even then I had some thoughts on fashion and what worked/looked good and was different. I was happy to set a trend rather than just simply follow it."

CR: What led you to a career in sports styling?

CW: "I worked at a swimwear magazine based near San Francisco, California, as a stylist and traveled all over the world shooting girls in swimwear and adding accessories and pieces of actual clothing reflecting where we were (Morocco, Greece, Spain, Mexico) after a year of working there I then came back to Los Angeles, got an agent and started doing more of that plus working with younger celebrities. One day I met a photographer who was ONLY shooting sports/athletes for magazines and some advertising, and we started working together (my background of being a pro skater helped open doors and trust with athletes and their management team.) About a year or two later, the world of advertising started exploding - showing athletes in everything from Nike shoes to car ads. I decided early on to stop doing other types of styling and create a niche as a Sports Stylist® and focus on what I loved. My agent thought I was crazy, we parted ways and I went out on my own..."

 

CR: What is it like working with some of the biggest names in sports?

CW: "It's awesome. Athletes are very respectful, they have grown up their whole lives listening to coaches and doing what's asked of them each and every day, so being on set is no biggie for them. I never got comments that I would hear in the 'celebrity world' from female athletes, like 'do I look fat?' etc. These girls work HARD for this body they have and it's meant to perform, they appreciate their body for what it does, even if it's not a size 2. So wonderful. I am also fortunate to see things up close that the average person will never see when an athlete is performing."

CR: Do you have any favorite athletes that you've styled?

CW: "I styled ice skater, Michelle Kwan, for many, many years and we became very close; the USA soccer team has quite a few girls I have styled and at one point in time they all lived down the street for me, so that was fun. Pro surfer, Lisa Anderson, was my idol growing up, so that shoot was awesome in every way. Anytime I get to style action sports, (skateboarding, surfing, bmx, etc) I am stoked. Derek Jeter, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps and Kobe Bryant are all fun to work with year after year. I can't say that I have ever worked with a pro or Olympic athlete I did not like!"

CR: What is a typical day like on set?

CW: "It starts prior to the shoot day with numerous conference calls, meetings, layouts that I need to look at; decipher and discuss with the photographer, art director, as well as clients. From there my team and I start planning what's needed from our end. The client may be Federal Expressing us the main wardrobe, (or not) but we may need to spray paint balls; goggles; track shoes gold, like I did for an ESPN feature for the Olympics; or we may need to do a wardrobe pull from the ground up to create a whole series of looks as the ad is for cars or a sports drink. There is a lot that goes into the prep of these shoots.

    For me being comfortable in what you are wearing is a must. There is a lot of running around, kneeling to fix things, and the weather can change from hot to cold super fast. 80% of the time my shoots are outside, not in a studio or other environment. Once we arrive on set (usually very early morning) my assistants start setting up the racks; loading in the wardrobe, laying out the shoes, props and accessories. From there we do a walk through with the photographer, client, ad agency and sometimes the athlete as well. I present what the vision is and we may all agree or make minor adjustments from there. Then it's time for the hair and make-up team to start; then I start getting the athlete dressed and head out to start shooting. Breakfast and lunch is provided on set and usually there are plenty of healthy choices along with amazing brownies or something sweet for those who want them for dessert."

 

CR: I've mentioned many times how much I LOVE your style; what are your favorite brands/items on shoots?

CW: "Thanks so much!! I keep it pretty simple in what I wear everyday on set. It's usually some sort of broken in jean - either Current/Elliott, All Saints or j.Brand; a top by Rick Owens, Thomas Wylde, Calypso or Splendid; a lightweight sweater by James Perse, Velvet or The Row. Shoes are always some sort of flats by either Rocco, Sigerson Morrison, Calleen Cordero, or flip flops from Haviana (they feel like cushions on your feet when standing all day) or if it's cold, boots by Golden Goose or Isabel Marant are my picks. I have this insanely rad down jacket by Rogan that goes on every road trip with me that I love. In the winter an Alexander Wang beanie is always in my bag and I am never without a backpack by either Lululemon or Burton - they hold my whole life!"

 

CR: And in your life?

CW: "I wear similar brands that I would wear to work and the same layering type look, but usually in more delicate fabrics than I would wear on set. I will also do shoes with some height to them (5 inch heels being my max.) I have a Rick Owens jacket that I love to pair with everything from dresses to jeans and a tee. I also add a slouchy or interesting bag - right now my PS1 bag in this cool midnight blue is a favorite to carry. My accessories stay pretty much the same - a few rings, layered necklaces and some bracelets by Scosha that I never take off. I also have a silver Tom Binns bracelet on my wrist that looks like the Cartier Love bracelet, but when you look closer you can see that instead of their symbol of the circle with the line in it, Tom Binns (rad as he is) has made it into an "A" for Anarchy. LOL"

CR: Are you coveting any items for summer? 

CW: "It seems that I am almost always coveting or trying to track down some elusive piece. Just about everything from the Isabel Marant line is on my 'want' list (as usual) and still mulling over that chunky YSL Arty Oval ring in turquoise. I am very lucky to have such great stores near me like Lulu's and Wrights in Manhattan Beach as well as Minnie T's, Heist, and The Guild in Venice; and the awesome Jennie at Barneys in LA, where they call me as soon as interesting pieces come in and also send photos over if I ask. It makes my life so much easier when I am traveling a lot and I don't feel that I am "missing" anything. Forty Five Ten in Dallas, does the same things for me and is always so welcoming when I pop by when I am on location out there. I really appreciate having awesome stores and fantastic salespeople who 'get me' and know what I like."

CR: Is there one trend you wish would disappear?

CW: "Not really, because trends go in cycles and what I loved years ago, I may hate now, but younger girls may be experiencing it for the first time and when I start to say I 'hate' some trend, some awesome girl comes along and rocks it like nobody's business and I change my mind. Being open to new ideas and how people put things together is what I think fashion is about."

 

CR: How do you like to unwind in your free time?

CW: "I like to look at blogs, fashion magazines, see movies, go to dinner, visit with friends and check out new and interesting stores. To me anything or anyone that inspires me is a perfect day!"

Interview: Summer Hair & Beauty with Stacy Cox

Candace Rose: With summer in full swing, what can we do to protect our hair from the sun's harmful rays?

Stacy Cox: "That's a good question because dry, frizzy hair is definitely a summer beauty 911, and I feel that one of the easiest things to do is just to arm yourself with the right technology and the right products; it doesn't have to cost a lot of money and it certainly doesn't have to take a lot of time for the busy moms on the go of course. Herbal Essences came out with their Hello Hydration; it's a collection of shampoos and conditioners that are very moisturizing, but they also have this really neat water-activated silkening ingredient infused into it and that helps restore shine and the health to your hair; it does this in only one treatment and I love that because it's really value filled and results filled, giving the consumer instant gratification and that's what everybody wants.

    Another thing that's really been on trend right now is color blend foam. SC: "I'm always getting asked about how to get summer, glowing, beautiful complexions; what are my anti-aging secrets; fountain of youth tips, so I sum it up in two things right now - one is retinol and the other is consistently using a broad spectrum SPF. SC: "I saved a couple good tips for the end! You can take your basic baby's teething rings, you know wash the drool off first; and then stick it in the freezer. Let it get real cold and in the morning when you have puffiness and dark circles, put the teething rings on your eyes for 5 - 10 minutes.

    When you get your cup of coffee and your tea ready in the morning, take your sugar cube and exfoliate the dead skin, the chapped skin off your lips; so that you're getting our pucker and your lips ready for your lip color and your day ahead. You can take a dab of honey, and you can hydrate your lips after you exfoliate them with the sugar cube (with the honey.) Those are kind of fun!"

 

CR: How about for those of us who unfortunately spent a little too much time in the sun, what can we do for sunburns?

SC: "You know, there are so many things. If you have a garden and you can grab an aloe vera plant; and you can cut the aloe vera plant open, a great thing to do is just put the natural aloe vera all over the sunburned area. You can go to your drugstore and grab hydrocortisone lotion, over the counter, right? Mix in a little bit of oatmeal with it and a little bit of that aloe vera gel; mix that up and chill it in the fridge; and put that all over you or all over the sunburned area for at least 10 to 15 minutes."

Interview: Get Fit for Summer with Celebrity Trainer, Harley Pasternak

I recently had the pleasure of speaking one-on-one with celebrity trainer, Harley Pasternak, who has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Megan Fox, John Mayer to just name a few, on everything you need to know to stay healthy and fit all while preventing injuries and looking great in your summer bikini!

Candace Rose: Can you tell us about the 5 factor diet?

Harley Pasternak: "Yeah, Candace, the 5 factor diet is an eating lifestyle that my clients use and it's five meals a day - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner; and every time you eat there's five factors, those five factors are a low-fat protein, like chicken, fish or egg whites; a healthy carbohydrate like whole grains, fruits and vegetables; fiber; healthy fats like canola oil, olive oil or fish oils; and a sugar free beverage. When it comes to fruits - eat them, don't drink them. I created a few hundred recipes that take no more than 5 minutes to prepare or any more than five key ingredients. CR: What are some good sources of protein for vegetarians?

HP: "It gets a little tricky when you're a vegetarian because a lot of the good sources of protein also have a lot of fat and are pretty calorically dense, so if you're a pure vegan you're really forced to get most of your protein from soy and from other beans and legumes. If you're a partial vegan; if you're sort of a lacto-octo-pesca-vegetarian (there's so many different blends these days) and you have dairy, then you can have yogurts and milks. There's so many other great dairy products that you can get the skim milk version or the fat-free milk versions. If you're someone who has egg whites, I think that's a phenomenal source of protein; fish is something that I suggest everyone try to make an effort to eat more fish (low mercury fish.) You don't want to have too much tuna or swordfish, but things like salmon and trout; freshwater and shellfish are so high in protein and so low in fat and have many, many health benefits."

 

CR: Speaking of fish, some people don't care for it or are allergic to it - do you have any suggestions when it comes to vitamins? Should everyone take a multivitamin? 

HP: "I think a multivitamin is a great insurance policy. I'm not big into supplements and pills, and potions, and powders but I've always said a multivitamin. I take a Centrum multivitamin every day, it's a great insurance policy, but people have got to be physically active and that's so important. We quite often look at diets as an easy way out, diet's important; we all have to eat properly, we also have to move. You look at certain cities like Houston who only take 200 steps a day on average. You look at somewhere like Beijing or Tokyo, they take between 12,000 and 13,000 steps a day, so diet aside; getting people to move more is essential to them being physically fit."

 

CR: Now that swimsuit season is in full force, what can we do to get Lady Gaga's flat abs?

HP: "Well, you're going to think I'm crazy, I'm going to tell you to get...out of the gym, don't go to the gym. Get out of the gym. The weather is beautiful, let's take advantage of more daylight, warmer climate and do the movements you were doing in the gym, outside. I'm going to show you right now; now Mica's actually going to demonstrate three simple movements (screen shots shown below) that I would be doing with Lady Gaga. 

    Now the first one is a sumo squat, it's such a simple movement you can do it anywhere - in the park or in the shade. Right now Mica's using a 5-pound dumbbell but you can use a water bottle, a jug of water; you can also use a heavy fruit or vegetable like a watermelon that's in season right now, is a great way to tone and tighten your thighs.

     Now she is doing a side bend which works the love handles. Now, I'm sure you don't have love handles, Candace, but for those of us who do, it's a great way to really tone and tighten the sides of the abdominals.

    And this third movement is a very simple movement I call a reverse fly and it strengthens and tones the muscles in the upper back between the shoulder blades. This is such an important area because it makes your posture that much better. It gives you a natural chest lift and it also lengthens your midsection and your abdominals.

    I'll tell all your listeners out there, please make sure you don't overdo it. Start off with maybe one set of 20 repetitions of each without any weight, gradually increase. When we're outside and the summer gets nice we tend to want to push things a little bit because we're wearing less clothing, we want to look better quicker. Pace yourself, otherwise you're going to get injured and if you do get injured please see a doctor. In the meantime ice it, rest it; grab some frozen peas. I love the Ace brand products, like the hot and cold therapy products, the elastic bandages, the braces; and if your shoulder hurts, keep walking and jogging with your lower body and if your knee hurts, keep using your upper body and doing abdominals, etc., etc."

CR: How about the dreaded shin splints? I just started running recently, I used to get them back in high school and now they're back. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?

HP: "Well, shin splints is an umbrella term for a lot of different conditions that happen on the front of your lower leg. I think it's important to identify what the shin splints are from. First and foremost rest. You need to stop what you're doing that's causing the pain. It could be small microfractures in the bone which is not a good thing. You really to need to rest at that point. It could be the muscles on the front of the shins that are sore, you're overusing them or maybe they are weak, so I think what's important is rest first of all. Maybe you need to see a doctor to identify what kind of shin splints you have; maybe it's poor footwear; maybe you need special orthotics; maybe you need to run less distances; maybe you need to run on different surfaces but it's really important that you don't let that stop you from being physically active, so in the meantime maybe cycle or swim or do other things as your shin splints dissipate."

 

CR: And for those of us who get hungry after working out; do you have any healthy alternatives, so we don't defeat the purpose of exercising?

HP: "If you're getting hungry after working out, chances are it's probably time to eat, and I try not to plan my meals relative to the workout; I try and plan my meals relative to the day. So, I eat five times a day - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, and if you're working out between one of those then make sure you have those five factors of whatever you're eating. Make sure you have the low fat protein, the healthy carb, the fiber, the healthy fat and the sugar free beverage with every meal." 

 

CR: I just heard about your new show, "The Revolution," congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about it?

HP: "Yeah, it's on ABC. We start shooting soon and starts airing in January. Right now it's Tim Gunn from Project Runway and Kimberly Locke from American Idol and myself, the three of us are going to be changing peoples lives from weight loss to changing the way they look, the way they feel, the way they dress, their personal relationships and I'm really, really excited. It's great to work with celebrities one on one but to be able to work with millions of people and really help change their lives, I think is going to be really fulfilling."

Interview: Summer Grilling & Dessert Ideas with Elizabeth Mayhew, Editor-in-Chief of Woman's Day

Candace Rose: What are some easy and affordable menu ideas for summer parties?

Elizabeth Mayhew: "So, we're starting at the grill because of course given this summer that's where everybody wants to go; but rather than grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, we are grilling pizzas which if you think about it, makes total sense. The open flame of a grill is exactly what you get in a wood burning pizza oven, so you get that same delicious taste and texture but to make it even easier we're using Boboli pizza crusts which come in three varieties - an original, a thin, and a whole wheat which makes it super easy.

    Buy it at any grocery store, you bring it home and all your friends and family to customize it with different toppings whether it be grilled vegetables; cheeses; tomato sauce; pesto; you name it. Super easy, all you do is first put the Boboli on the grill for two minutes on each side just to warm it up, then you can top it; put it back on the grill, close the lid for ten minutes; take it out and you've got a delicious pizza."

CR: How about when it comes to desserts?

EM: "When it comes to dessert take advantage of fresh berries and all of the delicious fruit that's around. The best way to transform it is just by putting a dollop of Reddi-wip on it, it totally transforms the berries. You put them into a dish, and one thing you can do is take tortilla strips; dust them with some cinnamon and sugar; bake them in the oven until they're crisp; put them on top of the berries and then just put some Reddi-wip on it. It's absolutely delicious."

CR: How about when it comes to decor?

EM: "When it comes to decor, my favorite thing to do is to take glass vases that I have (I have tons of them around the house), I just layer them with berries. You fill the vases with the berries, put them down the center of your table; everybody eats dinner; everyone has a good time; the come dessert you just go in. You get a can of Reddi-wip out of the refrigerator, bring it to the table with a big serving spoon and let people dig into the centerpiece; it kind of solves two problems at once."

Celebrity Interview: Throw A Great 4th of July Cookout with Iron Chef & Macy's Culinary Council's Marc Forgione

With the 4th of July only a few days a way, I had the pleasure of speaking with newest Iron Chef and Macy's Culinary Council's, Marc Forgione, on planning a delicious Independence Day meal for your party. If you love sausage and pepper sandwiches, you'll love his new twist to this classic dish and many more great tips on making your celebration as mouthwatering as possible!

Candace Rose: What's your number one tip for throwing a great cookout this 4th of July?

Marc Forgione: "My number one tip is to make sure that you're with good friends, having some good drinks, some good food and of course checking out the Macy's 4th of July fireworks."

CR: Can you tell us more about the celebration on the 4th?

MF: "Well, if you didn't know, now you know Macy's throws the biggest party of the year with definitely the best fireworks that you can catch live or on tv, you just have to check your local listings."

CR: What are you cooking for us today?

MF: "Today I'm going to show you a cool spin on the classic sausage and pepper sandwich that you see all over the place, especially when you're having backyards, at a ballgame or something. I'm actually going to kind of walk you through how to make a sausage and peppers from scratch. 

    So, what you're going to do is you're going to start with some fresh pork belly, which for those of you who aren't familiar with it, fresh pork belly is literally just raw bacon or fresh bacon. I guess sometimes it sounds a little more appetizing than pork belly. So, you take it and you get it into your KitchenAid meat grinder attachment; and here's a cool little trick - when you're doing sausages; making meatballs; or hamburgers even, you actually grind the garlic in the grinder with the pork. It goes through and what happens is the garlic doesn't just get mixed into it in chunks, it actually gets enveloped in the meat, so you're really tasting this cooked garlic flavor but you're not getting the actual texture from it. 

    Then from here you add your spices - we go with a little fennel seed, some black pepper, a little bit of scallions, some salt and then depending on how spicy you like it (a lot or a little) red pepper flakes. Once you get it to this point you've got your sausage filling and from here there's two different things you can do - you can either just form it into patties or roll it into a log (up to you) and you can just toss it in a pan or on the grill; or you can take it to the next step if you'd like and get the sausage stuffer attachment and you can actually make these beautiful homemade sausages (shown below), just like as if you were in Little Italy in a meat market, just like that.

    Once you get this part to it you're in the home stretch and you're making your sandwich. You take your favorite hero roll; hot dog roll or whatever you like; what I like to put on this one is a spicy mayonnaise; and we take sriracha hot sauce, which is a thai chili paste; we take our cooked sausages here and of course sausage and peppers isn't sausage and peppers without the peppers, so instead of just sautéing them like you see (shown below) normally on a sausage and peppers, we actually pickle them with some peaches; a little bit of fennel; some thyme. So you close this thing up and when you look at it, it kind of looks just like a sausage and peppers, but when you take a bite it's completely different and you get taste coming from all over the place. It's a lot of fun and I haven't made this yet where people aren't asking me for the recipe at the end."

CR: How about the side dish?

MF: "Well, you know when you're going to a barbecue or somebody's party, somebody always says, what can I bring? And obviously you're going to say 'oh how about a side dish.' In the summertime, especially around the 4th of July, cherry tomatoes are just starting to come off the vine and we've all seen some olive oil, garlic and balsamic vinegar - which I love, don't get me wrong; but try something a little different next time. Take a little fresh ginger and grate it, when the grated ginger falls into the towel, just give it a couple squeezes and you get this beautiful, flavorful ginger juice that actually takes the tomato salad and kind of brings it up to another level.

    And then obviously if you want to do something sweet, here we have basically an apple but kind of done in a different way as well, it's five minutes (more or less) start to finish, so again all these things they're things that you've had before but they're done with a little twist and sometimes people appreciate that kind of thing."
