Interview: Spring Beauty Buys With Polly Blitzer of Beauty Blitz

Last week I had the chance to speak once again with Ms. Polly Blitzer, Founder of Beauty Blitz to discuss her favorite beauty buys for spring! From whitening your beautiful smile to the latest in hair, makeup and nails, she has it all!

 

 

 

Candace Rose: What are the hottest trends in makeup?

Polly Blitzer: "Well, there are so many great trends for spring and they're going to knock your socks off, Candace. You're going to have to buy a new new pair! The first is it's all about a white, bright smile. You're never fully dressed without one and this season it takes two and what I mean by that is it takes just two hours to get a noticeably whiter smile and two products. I also want to tell you a little bit about skin. Women as we head into the warmer months, we want to get light coverage. CR: How about for hair?

PB: "Oh my gosh! Well, for hair, I feel since the dawn of time women have been complaining about hair frizz for my over ten years as a Beauty Editor. The most commonly asked question is 'What can I do to get rid of frizz' so finally at long last, there is a fabulous long lasting product, it's by Garnier Fructis called Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Blow Dry Perfector. It's an easy two step treatment that de-frizzes your hair right at home. First you apply a smooth it serum to damp hair, leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse. Then apply perfect it cream, blow dry or flat iron your hair as you typically would. It's heat activated and has proteins that are similar to the proteins in human hair. What it does is it totally gets rid of frizz and makes your hair sleek and smooth but it lasts for up to seven shampoos. I have never heard of anything like that, it's totally formaldehyde-free so it doesn't have any chemicals that people have been buzzing about that you don't want in your hair stuff, and it's $12 at the drugstore. Think about something that takes very little amount of time compared to a salon treatment, but so convenient and the results last for up to seven shampoos, so again it's kind of like answering our beauty prayers.

And then for nail polish everyone always wants to know that hot polish shade, all they need is that one bottle of something or a couple bottles of something to really jazz up their look because nails are almost like a wardrobe accessory now. Essie is the Queen of nail polish and she launched her spring collection, it's called 'The French Affair' collection. They're really playful names but they're all really modern pastels. They almost like an Easter basket and Easter eggs. The one that I love the most, that I'm wearing now, I wore it all weekend and got so many compliments is 'French Affair Pink.' They're $8 a bottle, it's so easy just swipe on a coat of the hottest nail hue like this 'French Affair Pink' or even like the lilac and the blue and some of the new modern neutrals and beige's and you have an update to last summers wardrobe. You don't even have to go shopping as much. It's all about updating with some fun accessories like your top ten on your nails."

Celebrity Interview: TV Host & Piperlime Guest Editor, Louise Roe Discusses Spring Fashion!

Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with Piperlime Guest Editor, Louise Roe most famously of "Plain Jane" (MTV and the CW Network) and MTV's "The City" to discuss the latest fashion trends for spring! The 1970's are making a huge comeback and Piperlime has everything you need in every price range to do so!

Candace Rose: What are the hottest trends we'll be seeing this spring?

Louise Roe: "It's all about the 1970's actually, so think Studio 54, Charlies Angels, that kind of vibe. The first is the maxi skirt. The long hippy, whiskful kind of skirt that flows around in the wind. It's super sexy and on the top half of your body just keep it simple with a white tank or a cardigan. I'd layer it with a cute scarf on top and then for shoes, just a flat sandal or actually if you want to go a bit urban and edgy - a biker boot. I love it, really hot!

The second is all about how to wear 'the dress' spring. We're getting rid of the 'little black dress' and it's all about the 'little printed dress' this spring. The brighter and bolder the better honestly and I think what's interesting is the hem has actually lowered a little bit this season, (down to the knee) so we're calling it 'the midi hem'. Keep your shoes simple honestly. If something is bright a tan wedge is absolutely perfect. It doesn't attract attention away from the material. My favorite is the flared jean. It's back with a vengeance. I've got a pair on myself and it's very flattering on a womanly figure. It really does flatter curves, so my one tip would be buy them a little bit too long (like an inch or so) and wear a high heel or a wedge underneath, and that way you'll elongate your legs really gorgeous. Make sure you cinch it in with a belt on the waist  and the top half just keep it nice and girly. So either a floral blouse or a cropped tweed jacket. Now over to shoes, the wedge. The wedge is our best friend because it's almost as comfy as wearing a flip flop. Do you remember the espadrille? That was huge a few years ago on the beach. They have had a complete makeover. The espadrille has gone high heeled. I have to say that's a huge celebrity trend. They're really picking up on that in all the magazines and runways. And last but not least, bling. We can't forget about our jewelry. It's all about layering up as many bangles and bracelets and cuffs as you can fit on your arm, all at once. Look for jewelry that has leather in it. Also, men's watches. That is a massive trend we are seeing. There's how to do your 1970's spring fling."

CR: You mentioned maxi dresses and long skirts are everywhere for spring. Is this a style that all body types can wear?

LR: "It really is as long as you look at yourself and tend to cinch in your waist because that is always a part that will make you look slimmer. If you wear a big maxi dress you have to make sure that parts of your body are tighter. You can show off your curves with a big belt, that will really cinch in your curves. It's really great because it does hide a multitude of sins underneath maxi skirts and dresses, so we love that."

CR: What colors will be big this season?

LR: The key color is orange. We're seeing a lot of coral and even pinks, colors that you think would clash. For instance a dress in reds, pinks and purples all worn together in beautiful prints- huge! We love it!

CR: Is there one item you suggest women purchase that will carry into summer and into fall?

LR: "That's actually a great question and I'd say the flare because it's really great for spring but you are also going to wear it with a wedge or a flat sandal for spring and then all the way through to autumn. You can put it with a pump or a closed toed boot and a big chunky cardigan or a sweater. It's the perfect transitional piece."

Interview: Amy E. Goodman, Author & Commentator Discusses Fashion, Beauty & Her New Book, Wear This, Toss That

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Amy E. Goodman, author of "Wear This, Toss That" and frequent contributor to the "Today" show, "Good Morning America," "The Early Show," "The View" and "The Rachael Ray Show" to discuss her new book, fashion, accessories, beauty and jewelry!

Candace Rose: What is the first step one should take to organize an out of control closet?

Amy E. Goodman: "You need to make three piles: one is the wear, one is the toss and then you have the maybe pile. It's the maybe pile that the entire book deals with to help women simplify their choices and get that stuff either moving back into the closet or onto charity. I do in the very beginning of the book outline thirty essential pieces that every woman should have and that starts with two blouses and two button down shirts. Now with the button down shirts, it's actually a hot trend for this spring, easy enough, simple enough to do. Make sure you get one in a neutral hue so that it can mix and match with various pieces and separates that you have in your closet and then the essential number for jeans is three - one for work, play and date night. The trouser jean is something designers are increasingly turning to because it has a wider cuff on the base which is great to counterbalance the hips (for those of us who have a bit of curvature in the hip.) This is actually good news because we've seen season after season of skinny pants and now it's more the trouser cut which is just a little bit more generous on the base, again great for those of us with curves."

CR: What about shoes and handbags?

AG: "Shoes this season - look for platforms, embellished flats and strappy sandals. Shoes in general, if they are hurting you; if you have a new shoe you've been meaning to get stretched, take it to the cobbler, get it done so you get those shoes on your feet and you're actively wearing them. With handbags it's one of three trends: it could be the oversized tote, still make this proportional to your body too so your not engulfed in the tote, right! Really small, little handbags that have long, long straps; again think about proportion. I talk about proportion and sizing a lot in the handbag chapter. A lastly, it's good to have an evening clutch that you can take for going out on the town at night. In addition to other accessories you want to look for, make sure you have three stud earrings, two pairs of chandeliers, and four statement necklaces. Also, a stack of bangles and stack them up your arm. That is the style tip for this season. Lastly, also for the wrist: I love a classic watch because it really completes your look and makes you look super polished. These are from Timex (shown below). The delicate bracelet styles are a nod to the feminine dressing we're seeing on the runways and the color banded watches with the slightly oversized face; the color, oh my goodness, color everywhere that you turn you're going to see that in store fronts now. These are available at select Kohls for $50 and up. And an underlying theme throughout the book is that you do not have to break the bank in order to have great style and revamp your wardrobe."

CR: Can petite women wear the Oversized Watch trend without it being overpowering?

AG: "Yes, in fact the watch that we showed does not exceed the length of the wrist in therms of the size of the case and that is essential. So for petite, these are styled to be oversized but for a woman's wrist. When you get into trouble for petite women is when you grab your husband's watch or your boyfriend's. That watch is actually a man's watch and it's just too loose and the case is too big, so there is such a thing as 'proportioned oversized' and that's what we're talking about."

 CR: When it comes to jewelry what should we keep and what should we toss?

AG: For jewelry, we talked about some of the things that you absolutely, essentially should have. The toss items are things that are chipped or broken, haven't gotten them fixed, maybe something that you picked up on a vacation - such as beautiful shelled jewelry or wooden jewelry, (it just has a tendency to break more easily) you've been meaning to toss it out of your accessories drawer but you just haven't had a moment to do so. Also, another type of necklace that you want to toss would be the choker. It's generally for people that have super, super swan-like necks, otherwise it kind of cuts you off at a weird part in your neck, makes it much shorter and can enhance a double chin. Those are some things to be weary of in terms of jewelry."

CR: How about the beauty closet?

AG: "I have three chapters devoted to beauty. You really want to put into place a good skin care regimen. Make sure you get a great moisturizer, a good cleanser, a separate spf for your face so that you can ward off wrinkles for the future. Also makeup does have expiration dates. Most people don't know this so I made an entire chart with expiration dates of makeup and skin care products so that you can get rid of the old stuff, bring in the new trends which are nice pink cheeks, orange red lipstick and/or a totally nude lip; natural makeup so it looks just natural and fresh, dewy skin and last but not least enhanced lashes."

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Celebrity Nursery Designer, Mary Bauer owner of Bratt Decor who discussed how everyday moms on a budget can have the nursery of their dreams!

Candace Rose: What are some top concerns for moms in the nursery?

Mary Bauer: "The top concern is just to make sure that they're covering all their bases, they're creating something they love within their budget. I think budget is a big deal too."

CR: You designed the nurseries for the children of Mario Lopez, Halle Berry and Heidi Klum. Is it possible for moms on a budget to have a nursery similar to theirs?

MB: "Yes, it really is. You can make almost, not all the exact same choices, but the key to a successful nursery is a nursery obviously that is functional and secure. THe number one thing that makes people love or hate their nursery is the details, so you can put all these really touching details in your nursery and just make it one all in your own that you love."

CR: What are some of the most popular design trends for nurseries?

MB: "The most popular design trend I'm seeing right now is more neutral colors and natural fabrics. People are getting very sophisticated in their palette, so uses of colors like gray and taupes; and creams and browns; and whites, that's been really, really big the last year."

CR: What are some nursery must haves?

MB: "You really need three things: you need a great changing space, you need a great crib and you need a place to nurse. When you're designing the nursery I try to get their mom's to focus basically on three areas - one would be their space. Consider their space and make the most of it. If it's a small space, paint it bright so that it looks bigger. Buy furniture that can do double duty like a changer that can be a dresser, once you have your space figured out and have your furniture purchased. The second tip is to consider the function of the room. There's going to be a lot of diaper changing going on, so a well stocked changing station is an essential item in every nursery. You need lots of diapers, lots of wipes, a change of clothes and you need a diaper pail. I love the Diaper Genie Elite. I don't know if you've seen it yet but it's tall and slender and it's white. It looks great in every nursery but it has this really cool foot pedal so that your hands are free to take care of baby and you're not transferring the germs by lifting lids and all of this other stuff. You can just pop the diaper in and get back to work with the baby. You've got your space, and then you've got your function, and then the third tip is just to consider the love and you can just scour your own childhood memorabilia. Everybody has something left over. Go see your mom, maybe it's your favorite teddy bear or your baby blanket or your baby shoes or some fabulously framed photo. Something like that, I think that's where all the magic happens in the nursery in those little, tiny details. It's when you walk in and you feel like you're at home. Any mom can do that, it's not dependent on budget and it's what really takes the nursery to the next level I think."

CR: How can busy moms make and maintain their nursery as clean as possible?

MB: "You know a lot of advanced planning and then just things in place like, make sure you have products that help with that. Interview: TV Correspondent & Author Amber Madison On The Dangers Of Spring Break & How To Stay Safe While Traveling

I recently spoke with author and television correspondent, Amber Madison on how female college students can stay safe while traveling during Spring Break. Be sure to share the following information with fellow students and friends, it could save your life or that of a loved one. *Please note that this post may not be suitable for those under 18 (or uncomfortable with this topic) as she mentions the hazards of Spring Break; including drinking, sex and contraception.*

Candace Rose: How should students prepare before heading out for Spring Break and what should they be made aware of?

Amber Madison: "Going on Spring Break as a student, you want to let loose, you want to have a good time but you also have to stay safe, so a couple things to remember - first thing is be aware of how much you are drinking. For many students going on Spring Break does mean that they will be drinking. So if you're going to be drinking on Spring Break think 'have I had too much', 'have I been in the sun all day,' 'do I need to be drinking water right now instead of beer?' Keep on top of that. The second thing to remember is to always go out in groups. You always hear 'safety in numbers,' it's so true, especially on Spring Break. You want to always know where your friends are, keep tabs on them but also help them keep tabs on you. Use your phone to text your friends, let them know what you're doing. If you're in a group and you decide to go off alone with someone, text your friends and tell them that; maybe even use the camera feature on your phone to take a picture of the person that you're going off alone with, so that your friends know who you're going off with as well as that you're going off. And something that Spring Break does mean for a lot of people is hooking up and that is a reality. I read a statistic recently that three out of five girls have a friend that had unprotected sex on Spring Break, so you really want to go into Spring Break prepared and that means if you are sexually active, use condoms; bring condoms with you. If you are a girl be on some form of regular contraception but then also know that if your contraception fails or you do end up having unprotected sex you do have the option emergency contraception and Plan B One-Step is something that anybody- guy or girl, 17 or older can buy over the counter at a pharmacy and it works for up to 72 hours after having unprotected sex. But the sooner you take it, the better it works and the more likely it is to reduce your chances of becoming pregnant."

CR: Do you have any tips for College students who might be headed out of the country for Spring Break?

AM: "I think heading out of the country is tough because you don't have a cell phone (if it doesn't work internationally.) Something you might want to look into is 'hey, can you make this phone work internationally, it may be for a week or for a month?"

CR: What are some tips on staying safe on Spring Break while having fun?

AM: "Well I think one thing you can really do to keep yourself safe is to keep checking in with yourself. Say, hey am I making good choices right now? Am I comfortable? I think usually when you're making a bad decision you get that gut feeling ahh something's not quite right. Listen to that gut feeling and if you're doing something that you realize this may not be totally safe, then stop yourself right, then and there. Keep checking in with yourself and keep analyzing what you're doing and making sure that yes you are having fun but you're being safe about it also."

CR: How should they handle things if they get out of hand?

AM: "Well, I think what you want is that things don't get out of hand in the first place and be prepared. Stick with your friends and maintain a level of responsibility even while you're off on Spring Break and that's the way to make sure things don't get out of hand."

Interview: Eve of Eve's Apples Lingerie Specializing in Fitting Small Busted & Petite Women

    How many of you women are unhappy with your cup size? Do you wish you were a different size? What if I told you you're probably larger than the bra you've been wearing, especially if you have wide set breasts. Would you believe me?

    I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Gayvin Powers (aka: Eve), owner and founder of Eve's Apples Lingerie, which specializes in bras for small busted and petite women. Powers shared that "many women have different individual cup sizes, many women just have wide set breasts and traditional bra measuring doesn't always work." I asked Gayvin what inspired her to open her lingerie boutique and she mentioned that a "fitting at Rigby & Peller in London where the Queen gets fitted was my inspiration. They can tell what size you are bare breasted and they don't measure you. I wanted to design lingerie for small breasts but didn't launch due to my trip to London. It was eyeopening to women's bra sizes and made me think further on style and sizes for small busts." It's very common for "shallow breasted women to think they're a AA, but many are actually larger. 90% of women that take our online bra fitting have wide set breasts." I was also intrigued to learn that "most women are wide set and that many women who are athletes think that they are A cups but are actually larger." The easiest quick fit for this situation is to "go down a band size and up a bra size."

    To measure your bust properly, Gayvin uses band, cup and individual breast measurements along with assessing body type, breast shape, breast placement and current bra issue. When getting fitted at Eve's Apples they "like to ask what size you currently wear to see if your band or cup size are correct. "Eve's Apple Lingerie website goes into great detail on how you should measure your breasts which is very easy. All you need is a bra without underwire, measuring tape and you are set!     When searching for a bra for small busted women it's important to know "contour bras are not recommended for small busts unless its a petite bra or you have full breast tissue. Interview: Fashion Expert & Arcade Boutique Owner, Rochelle Gores Fredston

 

 

    Last week I was honored to post a few of my favorite pieces from the gorgeous West Hollywood fashion boutique, ARCADE and today I'm thrilled to share my recent interview with its glamorous founder and owner, Rochelle Gores Fredston who has been featured on The Style Network, Good Day LA, InStyle magazine, Vogue, Town & Country, 944 Magazine and Life & Style to just name a few. A trusted name in fashion, Fredston is a celeb and stylist favorite! Audrina Patridge, Kristin Cavallari, Brittny & Lisa Gastineau, Kelly Rutherford, Ke$ha, Tori Spelling are just a few of her devoted  celebrity clientele. ARCADE Boutique famously served as the set for Jessica Simpson's guest starring role on HBO's Entourage last summer.

    Upon graduating from college Fredston moved to New York to work for Scoop NYC and in September of 2008 opened ARCADE in West Hollywood. She stated when she moved to LA she noticed there was "a need for a women's boutique that was sophisticated and edgy. Everyone did boho but there was no east coast flair." Fredston was also inspired by her "travels around the world." She listed some of the biggest trends for spring 2011 as "lace, girly, flirty, vintage inspired, bell bottom pants, chambre and denim dresses." As for jewelry and accessories we'll be seeing "statement pieces, necklaces, bangles, rings, headbands and a neon trend (in jewelry.)" Rochelle collaborated with "world famous jeweler Neil Lane to create an exclusive line for ARCADE Boutique, 'Neil Lane for ARCADE' Boutique" which are a Hollywood must have. If there's one statement piece every girl should have it's a "great statement necklace." For the shop-a-holic in us who already owns a statement necklace, the one item every woman must have this spring is the "chambre dress." I was intrigued to learn that every woman no matter what body type can pull off the bell bottom trend this spring. They're perfect with a "fitted shirt and heels (for petites)" and can be worn with "flats" for our taller counterparts.

Shortly upon returning from NYFW she attended Elton John's Oscar party. A noted philanthropist, Fredston was happy to attend "for a good cause" and dished "that everyone was there."

Interview: Spring Break Family Travel Tips with The Travel Mom, Emily Kaufman

 I recently had the chance to speak with Emily Kaufman better known as "The Travel Mom" to discuss money saving spring break travel tips for the entire family! From skiing to Disney World, she has the scoop to ensure your next family vacation is a hit!

Candace Rose: What is the first rule of thumb to getting the most out of your spring break travel dollar?

Emily Kaufman: "Well, you want to fine those family freebies, places where kids will eat free, cruises where kids sail free, resorts where kids stay free. Look for those family freebies and also look for the added value packages and what I mean by added value packages are things all bundled together for one price. CR: How do you organize details for a smooth trip?

EK: "Well, I try very hard to make technology my traveling companion, load the apps in your phone first. Program in your airline, hotel number and also with the airfares going back up as they are, there's never been a better time to protect your investment with travel insurance. Travel agents are a terrific resource that we seem to have forgotten about and they are so knowledgable and so experienced and love travel."

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Jodie Watson of TLC's lifestyle make-over show, Real Simple, Real Life on the steps entrepreneurs need to take when starting home based businesses and how to save money and headaches while doing so!

Candace Rose: What are the most important things we should know prior to starting a home based business?

Jodie Watson: "Well, you know Candace, one of the biggest mistakes that people make when starting their own home business is to start a business in an industry that they don't know anything about. So one of the biggest ways to succeed in your business is to start a business in an area in which you're trained or in which you have a skill set. Choose a business you are good at and that you really love doing."

CR: According to Entrepreneur Magazine over $427 billion is generated each year by home based businesses. What is the key to success?

JW: "The key to success in running your home based business really is organization. You want to be organized from the get go. Even in organizing your home office, it's the same as if you are organizing an office as an employees.
